I just woke up out of a deep sleep and can not drift off into slumber land again. Of course I was having a dream about color management, the topic up for discussion. I have been doing research on the topic this past week. Trying to wrap my brain around why we do what we have to do. It takes a lot of effort to get the image to appear in a predictable manner when it is captured in camera and then goes to the monitor, that is then ultimately sent off to print. sRGB, aRGB, colorspaces, bit depth, resolution, printer profiles, oh my!

It continually amazes me how much there is to learn about photography, and how complex it is. Most people have no clue how much is involved in photography and think that photographers are just people who get paid to, ” take pics.” If they only knew how many conscious decisions are being made at the capture of each image and how much knowledge it takes to make those decisions. My thought process when I’m deciding on exposure is typically something like…

All of his happens in a matter of a second. There are several other thought processes going on at the same time. And while you are doing this you are incorporating your unique style. And then there is the time spent editing each individual photo, etc.

I love, love, love photography and I love learning about it. I am trying to learn as much as I can so I can make the best decisions that I can. I guess that is why I woke up out of a dream dealing with color management, lol.

But now that I got all of that off of my chest, and a Spider monitor calibrator on its way in the mail to me, I think I can get back to sleep and try to catch some more zzzzz’s and not RGB’s.
