The New Kitchen Floor

After almost a year and a half we FINALLY got around to having our kitchen floor replaced. We’ve been busy and have had very little time to do this project ourselves. It is hard to relinquish a project you know you can do yourself (at least it is for Lee), but I’m GLAD that we did this time.

It all started October 2011. Lee and I were rushing home from church. We had to QUICKLY change, grab our stuff for the harvest party, and head back to church. I think I was the first to go through the back door, although everything is still a blur from the incident… haha. Well, whoever was first through the door… we both FROZE when we got inside. My brain had to process exactly what I was seeing all over the kitchen floor. “Dirt? no… maybe? Wood? whaaaat? WHAT?!” After a silent and VERY still pause, Lee and I looked up at each other, expressionless… I think I muttered, “we will just deal with this later” and that was that. We kept right on going as if nothing happened. I thought for sure one of us would loose it. And we probably would’ve if we weren’t on a TIGHT schedule that day.

Later that night we assessed the damage. It looked like someone set off a stick of dynamite in the corner of our kitchen floor. A gaping hole stared up at us with bits of linoleum and rotten wood spattered in a radial pattern from the “epicenter”. No doubt it was Tucker’s doing. I just couldn’t understand why he would tear up the floor, go through the sub-floor, and dig at the dirt. This dog has NEVER laid a tooth on anything other than his toys and he NEVER digs. Then I remembered the small hole in the baseboard. The only thig I can fathom is that a bug caught his attention, went through that hole, and he wouldn’t give up until he got it! However, it probably didn’t take much effort. Through this catastrophe we learned that our door threshold had been leaking and the sub-flooring was rotting RIGHT THERE due to the moisture. Yikes!

A friend from church owns his own handy-man business and came over with some pro materials to help fix the leak, then Lee and his dad patched the hole in the floor. And this past week we FINALLY had the linoleum replaced. It is such a relief to have this project DONE!

Of course I had to document the workers tearing up the old floor and putting in the new one. After the workers had packed up and left, the last pictures I took that day were of Tucker sitting on the BRAND NEW FLOOR! Thanks Bud

The kitchen floor before…

Bye bye! Do you see the lovely plywood door stoop? Nice right?! ;)

The NEW floor!

(And for the record, I had that floor picked out in LESS than 15 minutes. Yes sir. A RECORD for me.)

The animals are allll over it.
