Why Film?
“Film… You mean like old-school film?” I hear that a lot. And the answer is, “Yes, just like that.”
But in a world that is dominated by all things digital (including cameras), why choose film? There is something inherently beautiful about the aesthetic that film provides. Whether it’s the classic, grainy, rich, black and white photo of a couple’s first dance, or the light, airy, romantic, portrait of a couple that is crazy in love, there is something about film that speaks to the soul.
Everything about film is intimate. Film has been perfected and used by artists for more than 100 years. Just like a fine wine, or the love of your life, it never goes out of style and only gets better over time. Film is enduring. It is not instant or fleeting like digital. It requires deliberation and purposeful intent on the photographer’s part. And because it requires this attentiveness and patience, it allows me to slow down, connect with my clients, and capture them in that perfect moment in time.
So it’s really no surprise to hear that film photographers are in demand and have become highly sought after. Not only because film produces images that are softer and more romantic than digital photos, but also because film is “legit,” as one client put it. Film photographers really know what they’re doing. They don’t have a screen on the back of the camera to peek at to check to see if they’re “doing it right.” I know the rules of photography and I also know how to break those rules to create fine art images for my clients without needing to peek at the back of a camera. But I also believe that technology is amazing and I must admit that there are certain situations on a wedding day where shooting film becomes near impossible due to low light situastions. This is when digital has the upper hand. So throughout the wedding day I shoot film as much as I can, and where film leaves off, digital picks up. I am a hybrid shooter by nature, but I shoot film by choice!
