Tips from a Wedding Photographer
My fiancé and I really want to have an outdoor ceremony but we don’t want to be squinting in our ceremony photos. Do you have any tips to remedy this?
Go for it! Many photographers prefer natural light, especially film photographers like myself. Wedding photographers also love outdoor ceremonies. Not only do we have natural light to work with, but we are able to get different angles of the ceremony because we can move about freely. But I would agree that squinty eyes are not the best look for photos. I recommend to schedule the ceremony while the sun is lower in the sky. Getting married at high noon with the sun directly overhead will not be enjoyable for you or your guests. Ask the venue if there is an area of open shade that you can utilize. But if you are stuck with getting married in full sun light, I recommend setting up the ceremony site so that the sun is setting somewhere behind you.
I know it’s best to do a first look and formal photographs before the wedding, but I guess you could say we are old-fashioned. Why do you think taking the photos beforehand is so important?
I definitely pride myself in catering to the needs and desires of my clients. That said, I am a firm believer in taking the as many photographs before the wedding as possible, ensuring not only more time to get the best photographs but also getting the family formals out of the way by the time you are ready to go to your party. I find that stress levels with brides, grooms, family members, and wedding parties is greatly reduced when the formals are taken care of and they can focus on just having fun and being with their guests. Also, depending on the time of day, I may have better light and access to better portrait locations before the ceremony.
We’d love to set aside some time for an engagement shoot. Is this something you do?
Absolutely! All of my complete wedding collections include an engagement session. I work with you to plan the engagement shoot of your dreams, including location selection and wardrobe recommendations. I think it is very important to do an engagement session. Not only to give you some great photos together, but also because it gives us a chance to work together prior to the wedding. Having previously worked together, your stress level about wedding day photos will be reduced (hopefully to nothing!) and the photos will go smoother and quicker so you can get to your reception sooner!
