Old Town Hall Fairfax Wedding on Film

Old Town Hall Fairfax Wedding

If you read last Friday’s journal entry, you will know that I enjoy second shooting when I’m not photographing one of my own weddings. I love to second shoot because it allows me to continue practicing my craft, but it also gives me the opportunity to learn from other photographers and grow! It is also very rare for me to second shoot for a film photographer. I’ve only had the privilege of doing this a couple of times and it is such a different experience. The procedures and basics of second shooting remain the same… I’m still photographing a wedding… But the mentality and approach are different then that of a digital photographer. So when I work with film photographers we both “get it” and are on the same page. I swear film photographers have some secret code of telepathic communication.

But this particular job was even more special. Not only was I second shooting for a fellow film photographer, but I was also second shooting for a dear friend of mine. Let me just tell you that I had a blast second shooting for my friend, Matoli Keely Photography at this Old Town Hall Fairfax wedding.

Usually when you second shot for someone the first time there is a lot of dialogue about what that photographer expects, what type of gear they use (and how to use it/set it up), how they set up family photos, what methods they use for bride and groom portraits, etc. But because Matoli and I talk shop all…the…time… I already knew what she wanted and was thinking! What would normally take several weddings to accomplish in a working relationship, Matoli and I had 30 minutes into the day. #dreamteam

I also loved the location and details of this wedding. The couple was married in the main library-type room in Old Town Hall, Fairfax. The walls were lined with bookcases that were broken up by gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows. Tons of natural light flooded the room (a film photographer’s dream). There was a small courtyard area out back in between the building that was perfect for portrait time. The couple was also extremely sweet and laid back. It was a great day for sure!
