Over the last few months I’ve photographed a lot in the rain and/or overcast weather. Doing photos on an overcast day is very “safe.” Sure photographers sometimes love it because it’s like having one giant soft box to work with. Despite the fact that working with even light is a safe bet, I still love taking pictures in the sunlight. I love the warm rich light that the evening sun provides and oh, how I’ve missed it. Ever since I started offering beauty session I’ve been eager to do a maternity session! How awesome right? Treat a pregnant lady to a little pampering by a hair and makeup artist and then have a blast taking her photos and make her feel gorgeous! Well, that’s exactly what Courtney and I did.

I loved everything about this photo shoot. I had Jacquelyn from Enlightened Styles do Courtney’s hair and makeup, then I brought a couple of the studio’s dresses on location, and Courtney and I had a nice evening walking around and taking pictures. This photo session was so laid back and I was SO happy to be shooting in the sunlight again! With all of these things in place; a gorgeous and laid back momma-to-be, an awesome hair and make up stylist, my favorite film stock and camera, my favorite film lab, an awesome location, and perfect weather… I knew the photos would be amazing! But that isn’t the only reason why I love this photo session so much.

Let me preface this by saying that I love, love, love shooting weddings, but let’s be honest, they can be a little crazy sometimes. Ok… not sometimes… weddings are usually a little crazy/hectic. On a wedding day I have to keep track of SO many things on top of taking pictures. I’m very organized and work well under pressure which is why I love it so much and do well. BUT… sometimes I need to unplug from those stressors and just quietly, uninterruptedly, pour my whole heart into just simply shooting. They are cathartic for me and that is what I get from these portrait sessions. I left Courtney’s session feeling like I just had the best to the best therapy session ever! My ride home through the country was thoughtful and peaceful. I was confident that Courtney’s photos would be amazing, and I was excited to send the rolls of film to the lab, but I was also thankful for the opportunity to simply take pictures.
