Tips for an Awesome Engagement Session

  1. Location. If you are not sure where to start with picking a location for your engagement photos ask your photographer for some suggestions! It’s likely they will have some secret places they can recommend. Think about what vibe you want your engagement photos to have; organic, fun, romantic, formal… and think about what is important to you as a couple. Pick a location that represents who you are or that has special meaning to you.
  2. Think outside of the box. Everyone loves the ideas they see on Pinterest… But those shots have been done over and over. If you want something more unique and that really represents you two as a couple, try to think outside of the box. Instead of going on Pinterest, ask yourselves, “What do we like to do?” and “What do we enjoy doing together?” Do you like going to the farmers market on the weekends? Is on of your favorite traditions in the fall to go to a local orchard?
  3. Get other vendors involved! If you love fresh flowers, why not get your wedding florist involved in your engagement shoot? You could have them provide you with a few loose stems, make a simple bouquet wrapped in butcher’s paper, make a floral crown… Are you hiring a calligrapher for your wedding? Have them transcribe your favorite love letter from your significant other to be photographed… There are so many ways to make your engagement session uniquely yours by incorporating gorgeous details!
  4. Professional hair & makeup. I’m sure most photographers will admit that their skills do not encompass hair and makeup. I always suggest having your hair and makeup done by a professional for your photos. If you’re hiring a makeup artist for your wedding, ask them if they can work with you for the engagement session. Plus this will give you a chance to work together before the wedding!
  5. Wardrobe. The big question – what do we wear!? I love any excuse to go shopping for cute outfits, so if this is your mantra too, then get ready to have some fun! I always say pick outfits that coordinate but that are NOT “matchy matchy.” It doesn’t look great if you are both wearing black shirts and khakis. Have fun with colors, patterns, and textures. Ladies have fun layering details like jewelry. I find that bright or neon colors can be distracting. And never anything with a logo or graphic design on it. That always takes the focus away from you two. If you really aren’t sure, ask your photographer!
